A South Tyrolean distillery founded on a single copper still in 1946 has spent nearly eight decades refining the art of transforming Alpine fruit, herbs, and pomace into some of Italy’s most celebrated spirits.
The story begins with Gottfried Roner and a single still. In 1946, in the mountain landscape of Alto Adige, he began distilling grappa — and the results attracted attention quickly. Encouraged by early success and driven by a personal passion for fruit, Gottfried expanded his range to include liqueurs made from gentian, juniper, and bilberry, each one drawing on the botanical richness of the surrounding region. A second still followed, and with it came a new chapter: the distillation of fruit itself, which would become the signature expression of the Roner house. What started as one man’s pursuit of precision has, across three generations, grown into Italy’s most decorated distillery.

That founding philosophy — that only the finest raw materials deserve a place in the still — remains the cornerstone of Roner’s production today. The distillery works exclusively with high-quality fruit, herbs, spices, and pomace sourced from Alto Adige, a region whose altitude, climate, and agricultural traditions produce ingredients of exceptional character. Long-standing relationships with fruit suppliers, cultivated over generations, ensure that what enters the distillery meets standards that have never been relaxed. The result is a portfolio of spirits defined by their genuineness and natural intensity: grappa, fruit distillates, liqueurs, and mixology-grade products, each carrying the aromatic signature of the valley in concentrated form.
What distinguishes Roner from many of its peers is the deliberate tension it maintains between craft and modernity. The distillery applies the most current production technologies, yet insists that these exist in service of traditional distillation principles — not as a replacement for them. Knowledge accumulated over decades is treated not as a relic to be preserved behind glass, but as a living body of expertise, one capable of evolving and finding new expression. This outlook, inherited from Gottfried and refined through successive generations, is what allows the house to reinterpret its own tradition without losing sight of it.
The breadth of the Roner range reflects this dual commitment. Grappa — described by the distillery as the queen of Italian spirits — sits at the heart of the collection, while fruit distillates bring the aromatic complexity of Alpine orchards directly into the glass. The liqueur range extends the palette further, drawing on an unusually wide variety of botanicals. More recently, the distillery has developed a dedicated line for mixology, supplying bartenders with spirits of sufficient quality and character to anchor serious cocktails. Across all categories, the ambition is the same: to capture the scent and flavour of each raw ingredient with the greatest possible intensity.
For the traveller moving through Trentino-Alto Adige with an interest in the region’s food and drink culture, Roner represents something worth seeking out — not merely as a producer of fine spirits, but as an institution that has spent nearly eighty years translating a specific landscape into a liquid form. The medals and titles accumulated along the way are, in the end, simply the formal acknowledgement of what three generations have known from the beginning: that patience, precision, and an uncompromising relationship with the land produce results that speak clearly for themselves.
