About

Terme dei Papi stands at the intersection of ancient tradition and contemporary wellness, drawing on sulphurous spring waters that have been prized for their therapeutic properties for three thousand years. The facility as it exists today traces its origins to 1989, when Viterbo native Socrate Sensi undertook a comprehensive renovation of the municipal thermal centre, inaugurating a new era of management in 1993. Now stewarded by Sensi’s children and grandchildren, the complex has grown into one of Italy’s most distinguished thermal destinations, holding the highest national classification — Prima Categoria Super — for the efficacy of its treatments.

At the heart of the complex lies a monumental pool fed exclusively by hyperthermal water from the Bullicame spring, maintained at a constant 36 degrees and open in every season, including after dark. A natural volcanic grotto, where thermal steam envelops the body, complements the pool, alongside a vascular pathway and Hydrosound experience. The spa extends the offering further with facial, body, holistic, Ayurvedic, and ritual treatments, many incorporating the mineral-rich Bullicame mud. For those wishing to continue their care at home, the Aqua Dives cosmetic line translates the same thermal water and mud into a range of dermatologically tested, Italian-made skincare products.

The therapeutic dimension of Terme dei Papi is formally recognised: many treatments — including mud therapy, balneotherapy, and inhalation programmes addressing respiratory, dermatological, and musculoskeletal conditions — are covered by Italy’s National Health Service. Guests choosing to stay overnight will find four-star superior accommodation at the on-site Hotel Niccolò V, with direct access to all facilities and a restaurant built around seasonal, locally sourced ingredients from the surrounding Tuscia region. Viterbo’s historic centre lies just beyond the gates, and Rome is easily reachable.
