About

Sant’Andrea occupies a quiet corner between Piazza di Spagna and the Trevi Fountain, in the historic Rione Colonna district, where it has been a constant presence since at least the 1920s. The Contini family has run the restaurant since the 1940s, now into its third generation, carrying forward a tradition rooted in the rhythms and recipes of everyday Roman life. The restaurant takes its name from the nearby Baroque basilica of Sant’Andrea delle Fratte, whose lantern and Bernini’s angels have long served as its symbolic reference points.

The building has witnessed Rome across its most defining chapters. What began as a simple osteria offering modest meals during wartime scarcity evolved into a neighbourhood gathering place in the 1950s, and later into an informal setting for political conversation in the 1980s and 1990s. That layered history gives Sant’Andrea a texture that goes well beyond its menu — though the kitchen has remained its most reliable constant throughout. Roman classics anchor the dining experience: tripe, ossobuco, saltimbocca, amatriciana, cacio e pepe, and carbonara, alongside fresh homemade fettuccine, ravioli, and gnocchi prepared daily. Fish and house-made desserts round out a menu that changes with the seasons rather than with fashion.

The sourcing reflects the same considered approach. Local vegetables and meats, 36-month Parmigiano Reggiano from Red Cow milk, and cold-pressed Olio di Roma IGP are presented with the intention of being genuinely understood and appreciated. In a neighbourhood where dining choices are often made hastily, Sant’Andrea offers something more deliberate: a bright dining room overlooking the basilica, wooden tables, and a warmth of service that feels entirely uncontrived.
